Latvia begins the operation of the train traffic control system on the East-West corridor

Latvijas dzelzceļš has completed the modernisation of the train traffic control system on the East-West corridor, including the modernisation of the traffic control and signalling systems and of the level-crossing systems. The total cost of the project is EUR 93 Million. The project was implemented in 2005-2011 with EU financing, state aids and the company’s own funds.

“According to our company’s priorities the new system is going to increase rail traffic safety. It will also considerably facilitate and optimize train traffic control system in Latvia’s East-West railway corridor which is one of the most important transit routes”, says Uģis Magonis, president of “Latvijas dzelzceļš”. The leading European train traffic control system developers and adjusters involved in Latvia’s ambitious project Thales Transportation Systems Gbmh, Thales Rail Signalling Solutions Baltics, Latvia starts to operate a modern train traffic control system on the East-West axis Bombardier Belam, Systra and Safege Consulting Engineers/LTD Safege Baltija admit that they have gained invaluable experience which can be later used in similar projects in other countries with 1524 rail gauge.

By accumulating experience and knowledge gained from working on Latvia’s train traffic control system modernisation project, Thales Transportation Systems Gbmh is now planning to start a similar project in Ukraine and Kazakhstan while Bombardier / Belam has already participated in implementation of similar train control system in Uzbekistan.
